For some people, it is usual to visit a dentist for extraction or to consult a doctor for treatment. However, for those in the lower socio-economic class, bearing the pain is more practical.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), 50 percent of the population prefers private hospitals over public for its comfort. But the good facilities, high-end equipment and expert practitioners in the field of medicine of private hospitals mostly cater to the upper socio-economic class and leave the poor accommodated, but in debt.

This year, the LBSC chose to uplift the health condition of its community in celebrating its 35th Anniversary. Led by the Los Baños Doctors Hospital and Medical Center (LBDHMC) and LBSC’s Information Committee, 34 dental extractions and 122 medical check-ups (to 65 adults and 57 children) were accomplished by the participating expert physicians and dentists. Each patient was given prescribed set of medicines.

LBSC believes that good health starts within ourselves and that imparting this to the children is important in achieving a healthy community. With much enthusiasm, Dr. Nikki Avenido and Ms. Dea Badayos of LBDHMC led the active children in their journey to learning basic hygiene and waste segregation. A hygiene kit composed of towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap was given to the children after the lecture.

Despite their busy schedules, there were 30 volunteers from 22 LBSC member agencies, who assisted the medical and dental mission. This just proves that LBSC is concerned in every aspect of development, may this be in the field of science or the well-being of its community.
LBSC is one of the four science communities established by the Department of Science and Technology. The science community concept fosters the spirit of sharing resources and expertise among research agencies located in Los Baños (Quimby Mari Genota, DOST-PCAARRD).
